Anahtar Sözcükler: methiye geleneği, övgü, Orhun abideleri, Uygur ve Karahanlı edebiyatt: Panegyric poetry, defined in this narrow sense, is a type of poetry which offers a high praise of a person (usually a leader who possesses a power). Being part of qasida and masnavi of Medieval (Divan) Literature, panegyric poems were written using special patterns and rhyming schemes. The purpose of panegyric poems was to please someone praised in the poem. Panegyric poetry is a turn of phrase that includes not only literary genre of medieval literature. In every literary period it can be seen with different contents and forms such as prose or poetry that reflects political, economic, social and cultural features associated with a period. Whatever the purpose of praises or dedications writing was, even if they included exaggerated expressions, they were important for the reflection of relationships between rulers and poets, activities and artistic pleasures of rulers and etc. Generally, the approach of panegyric poetry in Soviet and Iran philology is very cynical. This cynical and judgmental view of panegyric poetry doesn`t apprise Turkic ruler`s contribution to development of literary process and other arts. This study concentrates on the relationship of the panegyric works with Turkic rulers in different literary periods of Turkic literature, especially from pre-Islamic period until Karahanli literature with a special focus on the reflection of the characteristics of that time.en_US
